What sound format is recommended for ipad / iphone applications?

Are there differences in speed and performance between cafe and mp3? Which format is best used to play game sounds?

Using an MP3 audio format may pause between your loops, as they require some work to unpack. For games where the sound should be instantaneous, the processor should work on the game, definitely go in the caf format.

From Core Audio Review :

The following list describes how iOS supports audio formats for individual or multiple playback:

  • Linear PCM and IMA / ADPCM (IMA4) audio . You can play multiple linear sounds of PCM or IMA4 format simultaneously in iOS without problems with CPU resources.

  • AAC, MP3 and Apple Lossless (ALAC) . AAC, MP3, and Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio playback uses efficient hardware decoding on iPhone and iPod touch. You can play only one such sound at a time.

Therefore, you should probably use PCM / ADPCM for sounds and AAC / MP3 for music.
