Is there an Amazon API or a free utility for publishing / uploading books to KDP (Kindle Digital Publishing platform)?

Now I use caliber to create the correct file formats. Charles was asked to rebuild the POSTing process to replicate / emulate it through JS. I would suggest that there must be an Amazon internal API for this, and maybe there is something in the new Kindle KDK development kit?
