How to unzip .xml.gz in windows?

I wrote a script to create sitemaps for my site and then compress the files in .gz. Everything seems to be in order, as Google can read URLs from files. But when I download them, accessing them through the appropriate url in the production environment (linux), and then open them with winrar (on my local computer), I get garbage, for example, is it a binary file or something like that.

The same thing works fine in my development environment (windows), so it seems to depend on the OS.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Have you tried 7-zip or Winzip. Both have gz support according to their producer sites.
