I am looking for a way to convert the PSD format to what Gimp can read

I have a bunch of PSD files (and even more), and I want them to be in a format that I can work with.

I had (some) successfully read PSD with Gimp before, but these files will not be read properly.

Is there any way to convert PSD to XCF?

I tried IrfanView, which shows the PSD in order, but without converting to Gimp XCF.

I read a (accepted) post on Yahoo Answers that says PNG can support layers. It's true? If so, how can I do this?

Useful suggestions / options will be saved.

PNG is a poor choice because it will not support many PSD functions ... XCF is also a bad idea, as even GIMP developers do not recommend it, because it is built around internal GIMP data structures (which can and can change from version to version) .

Many functions (but by no means ALL) of PSD can be converted to TIFF, which, for example, supports layers and some other things.

But for such a conversion, you will need Photoshop ... it can work and process and save multilayer TIFFs without any problems ... PSD "evolved" from the verion version and became quite complex - it can even contain vector data, etc. .
