How do hg forget that .hgignore lists?

I tracked files that I no longer want to track. Therefore, I updated .hgignore , but this does not make them forgotten. Besides the manual hg forget , do I have other options?

I do not think there is another option.

You have already checked these files in Mercurial. After hg forget .hgignore file will take effect and prevent them from being added. More precisely, a .hgignore file will make hg status stop showing files as not verified

Tracked files are never affected by the .hgignore file. Good hg addremove can help you. Take a look here .

With Mercurial 2.0 you can specify fileset for this! To forget ignored files, use:

$ hg forget "set:hgignore() and not ignored()"
