What version of Internet Explorer is built into Pocket PC 4.20 (build 14053)?

I am trying to find a version of IE on a mobile device with "Pocket PC 4.20" (shown on the "About" screen).

Also, what is the official brand of this OS, is it "Pocket PC 2002" or "Windows Mobile 2003"?

I was hoping to launch jQuery Mobile, but it does not seem to work, and the jQuery standard library.

The user agent sent by the browser is IE 4.01

Almost certainly equivalent to IE6. Of course, nothing new, but maybe even older. I would not rule out neither IE5.5 nor 5.0.

You can get some hints by looking at the UserAgent line in the server logs.

The Wikipedia article Internet Explorer Mobile suggests that it will be Pocket Internet Explorer 4, given that the OS (4.20) must be Windows Mobile 2003, and Internet Explorer Mobile was not released much later.

Yes, as simon143 illustrated, assuming this device is Windows, version 4.20.x refers to Windows Mobile 2003. However, if the device speaks about its WIndows CE, this is another matter. Windows Mobile or Pocket PC are specific implementations and configurations of WIndows CE. If CE is indicated on the device, then each application may be in different versions. Sorry, this does not directly answer your question and may slightly pollute the water, but it may explain why certain things do not work as you expect.

Pocket PC 4.20 refers to Windows Mobile 2003. And I believe that Pocket Internet Explorer 4 is included. It would have fewer features than IE6, since it became available only in Windows Mobile 6.5 with Internet Explorer Mobile 6.

jQuery Mobile does not officially support versions of Windows Mobile prior to Windows Phone 7, so I think you're out of luck, especially on an old platform like WM2003.
