“It is important to distinguish between the file format and the audio codec. The codec encodes and decodes the raw audio data, while the data itself is stored in a file with a specific audio file format. Although most audio files support only one type of audio data (created using an audio encoder), the format of the multimedia container ( like Matroska or AVI) can support several types of audio and video data. The gspot application does a good job of extracting codecs from audio and video files.

run it and drag the file into the window. It will pull all the data from there. Please note that some audio files will not display the codec as they are made from the "Raw" sound.
