How does a comet work? How to write a comet chat application to a person

As the name says, I am working on a webchat application where I expect that I will have many active users, and using ajax polling is not an option. I want a person to have a chat of 2 people, but please forgive me for Nobo, but I'm really lost. I read a lot about comets, but I think that all this is confused. How can I make it work the way I want? This person is talking to the person.

The comet is described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_(programming )), and some Google searches will lead to some tutorials. But why do you want to stay away from the survey, especially since the Comet approach still confuses you?

The survey will work fine for regular sites, scalability is likely to become a problem only after your application reaches a lot of traffic.
