How to overlay an icon on a folder or file icon. E.g. like Tortoise SVN, Dropbox, etc. place a mark over the file icon and the folder icon? How to do this programmatically, for example. from VB.Net.

Note that overlay icons are a limited resource, so various Tortoise extensions now have overlays. According to β€œOverlay Icons Appear, But Not All Of Them” in the TortoiseSVN FAQ , there can only be 15 overlay icons, and 4 of them are already used by Windows.

If you are truly happy using the same icons as Tortoise *, you should also use TortoiseOverlays. For more information on how to do this, see TortoiseOverlays / Documentation.txt in the TortoiseSVN tree.
