Is the standard mysql connection over port 3306 secure in Sequel Pro?

Simple question:

I am using Sequel Pro to connect to my database in the cloud. If I use the "standard" connection method (through port 3306), is it safe, or can the packet sniffer get my password? Should I ever use ssh connections?

Thanks!

This is not the default, but MySQL supports ssl.

Probably yes, your credentials are scattered in plain text and can be easily intercepted using a sniffer.

If you cannot force your provider to configure mysql ssl, perhaps you can first connect to the network where the mysql server is located, and then connect to 3306? Guess it depends on what options your provider provides you.
