How to select text in PDF files through the Chrome extension

I am new to programming. I am creating a Chrome extension that, when clicked, shows a popup with many categories with checkboxes. If you select the check box, the extension will interact with the web page and highlight text that belongs to the selected categories.

Now my question is how to select text in pdf files when I click the popup page button. Or how to interact with PDF files from the Chrome extension. Please help me.

I do not believe that you can. Chrome's built-in PDF rendering is just a plugin. This can be seen by looking at the source code of the page.
