Implement night mode (e.g. Google Sky Map)

I am writing an application that will be used at night and really benefit from the red "Night Mode", for example, Google Sky Map.

Can someone give any advice on how I will do this, please. Will it be a theme or some kind of overlay?

I am a developer on Sky Map. In fact, we do not use the theme - I would like to take this approach, since then we could easily blush all elements of the user interface, but I could not develop a way to dynamically change the theme. Let me know if you succeed! Instead, we blush all the graphics on the map using our own code (all this is done in OpenGL)

I know that it does not answer your question, but as a pointer, you can look at Cyanogenmod . I have it installed on my phone, and it has such a night mode. The whole screen goes into "red" mode.
