Please help with a very simple click of an Android widget button. Very upset.:(

I poured all the examples that I can find and I went through the official documentation from Google. All I am trying to do is create a toast notification by clicking on the widget.

I can make the widget (and button) appear, but I cannot get my intention to shoot. I have seen several examples that show this in different ways, but I just can't get it to work. I have not felt this helpless with coding for a long time, and I am starting to feel stupid.

This is what I have so far:
