SEO language information

I was wondering if it is better to define your language in HTML for search. For example, I have a French site, then I have three options:

1.) have the belief that Google can say that my site is French

2.) define the language in the HTML tag

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="fr">

3.) define the language in the meta tag

 <meta http-equiv="content-language" content="FR-fr" />

Which option do you think is the best? Or what combination of options?

language (language (e.g. French)! = location market (i.e. France)) detection is based on each page (not for the site).

it detects the language through the words used on the page (and in the URL), it does not care about the HTML tag (1) and the meta tag (2).

(you can test using the api language definition in which language Google thinks your page is using http://code.google.com/apis/language/translate/v1/using_rest_langdetect.html )

I always use 1 page === 1 language. I always make sure that I have only one language per page (translation of the entire navigation, making sure that the contents of another language are not displayed and not displayed on the page).

It is probably best to identify everything you can and make the search engine ignore it, rather than leaving it completely in case. The more information you give them, the better.

I usually stick with the third, meta tag content-language , as described here .

probabay should be on webmasters.stackexchange.com, but anyway

You must combine 2 and 3. Faith does not work with bots / spiders.

2.) define the language in the HTML tag

 <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="fr">

3.) define the language in the meta tag

 <meta http-equiv="content-language" content="FR-fr" />

Besides defining your language in html, you can sign up for Google webmaster tools. On this site you can set your geographic target to France (Site Configuration β†’ Settings).

andrewk is right - use 2 or 3, but note that in most cases the language is automatically recognized by the robot automatically.
