Does an upgrade on Amazon RDS multi-az interrupt I / O to an operational instance?

If I upgrade one instance of an RDS instance to a multi-az instance, will this interrupt the I / O operations of my current instance in the same way I would normally take a database snapshot? Or will my current instance continue to work as usual, without any effect on my application, while a second instance of db-ab was provided and brought online?

I understand that updating from small to large affects the I / O operations in a few minutes. This will simply create a new instance of the same size / configuration in another az using their beautiful GUI tools now available on the Internet.

I was not able to find the answer in the Amazon docs, and was hoping someone on the stack had experience.

Thanks!
