What exactly is added in the language levels of Java 7.0 and 8.0?

I just noticed the ability to select the Java language levels 7.0 and 8.0 in IntelliJ (in the "Project Settings" section).

Where can I find a brief description of what they allow? Level 7.0 is declared to enable "Dimonds" (what is this?), Lines in radio buttons (cool!) And "etc ..."?

Level 8.0 has Sample Annotations, which I don’t know about.

Do I need to use the appropriate JDK to install a higher level? IntelliJ does not seem to mind installing the language 7.0 and JDK 1.6.

If you need some reading, here are the links for official JSR (Java specification requests).

JSR 336 - Java SE 7

JSR 337 - Java SE 8

They contain links to other JSRs that are included in them.
