Does Android have Task == Application?

The terms “task” and “application” are part of the new Android terminology I'm learning. In the Actions and Tasks section of the Dev Guide, the following attention caught my attention:

The user presses the HOME key, goes to the application launches and selects a new application (in fact, a new task) .

What caused the question: “Task” - a synonym for “applications” in the Android world?

If not, what are the differences between the two?
