SSL wildcard generates error when not using subdomain

I have a web server (IIS) with an SSL certificate for * .mydomain.com

This works fine for https://anysubdomain.mydomain.com/ , but goes to https://mydomain.com/ causes a certificate mismatch error in IE (not verified in all other browsers).

Is there a way around this, or is it just a problem with how IE handles the wildcard in the certificate we have to live with?

The only way to remove the error message when accessing the site at https://mydomain.com is to place the base domain (mydomain.com) as the subject’s alternative name in the template. Several certificate providers will add this for free (including DigiCert and Comodo), but you will need to reissue your certificate.
