Is this possible in the context of J2EE? Server side (no ajax / js solution)

Short answer: None.

An HTTP request simply does not carry such information. It is implicitly checked, trying to send it to the client and see if he uses it or not. There are probably also various javascript options, but you obviously did not want to use them.

you can send cookies from the first page and then redirect to some index. if someone tries to get a different page, and then first without cookies, then it does not support it.
