I installed VS 2010 on a Windows 7 machine, which installs sql server 2008 by default. Now I want to install SSMSE 2008 by downloading the following file SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU and tried to install it, but it gave me an error.

Before installing SQL 2008, you must slipstream SQL 2008 SP1. A related article explains how to do this.

A simple solution is to install SQL Server 2008 SP1 or SQL Server 2008 SP2 . Installing SP1 fails because there is no SQL Server installation to fix, but in the process it will deploy new installation bits that have fixed the Invoke / BeginInvoke problem. After that, you start the normal RTM setup and it will succeed because it will reuse the newer installation bits already present on the machine from the SP1 installation. After successfully installing RTM for SQL Server 2008, you still need to apply SP1 or SP2.

If you are trying to install SQL Server 2008 Express, you must install the SP2 bit directly: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2) or better yet Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Express Edition . In 2008 R2 Express there is a database size limit increased to 10Gb .

I also encountered a similar situation. The workaround I've tried is

1) Launch the Sql Server Installation Center from (start-> programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2008-> Configuration Tools)

2) Click on the installation (in the navigation menu on the left)

3) Select the first option (installing a new server)

4) A new dialog box appears, click the "Next" button until the "Installation Type" screen appears. Select a new installation here

5) Click the "Next" button until you reach the function selection, check the "Management Tools" box.

6) Continue the installation, and if it succeeds, you can find SSMSE in the Start menu in the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 folder. I hope this helps.
