Is it possible to extend the surface of the WPF design in 2010?

I have an idea for a good WPF design extension, but I cannot find any information on how to interact with the WPF designer through the extension. A lot of information about a text editor, but not about the WPF designer.

Important Note. I want to do this through an extension, for example, you downloaded from the Visual Studio gallery, and not from the control that is added to the design surface.

Look for any information / links on this topic, thanks.

VS WPF Designer supports third-party extensibility, but practically does not support standard extensibility VS. The designer lives in his own AppDomain, and you will have to implement your own remote infrastructure between VS and WPF Designer in order to support extensions.

From what I saw, Microsoft doesn't care too much about WPF support in Visual Studio. They are more focused on Expression Blend - this FAR is better for creating WPF controls.

A quick google search appeared this tutorial , it can help you get started if you want to write plugins for it.
