VS2010 and Windows XP SP3

At home, I started VS 2010 on a computer with Windows 7 x64 without any problems, but at work we recently switched to VS 2010 running on WinXP SP3 x86 - and I have to say that it is terrible.

There are serious graphical crashes. For instance,

  • Intellisense is not working. You can start typing, and the intellisense drop-down box seems to work, but the text I print disappears. I do not see it until I press the Escape key or refresh the window, say alt-tabbing to another application, and then return to VS2010 again

  • If I cut / copy / paste and then move the cursor by scrolling or using the arrow keys, different parts of the text box are not updated properly. I see patches of another code where it should not be.

Other team members also face similar problems. Is there any patch I need to install? I already installed the UIA 3 ScottGu patch mentioned on his blog.

Any help would be appreciated.

-Thanks!

Well, finally, I found a solution. The trick is to completely disable hardware rendering through the registry. Here's the link - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa970912.aspx#disablehardwareacceleration

Try disabling hardware rendering (if enabled):

Uncheck Tools->Options->Environment->General->Enable rich client visual experience . You may also need to uncheck Tools->Options->Environment->General->Automatically adjust visual experience based on client performance .

You can see the system requirements for 2010.

Yes, XP with SP3 is supported, but is the video card on your DirectX 9 desktop functional? Also, is there enough video memory? I guess if you use a system that still runs XP, it's an old machine ... which usually means that video is shit.

You just need to update this. As an additional note, if you are using a machine that has video embedded on the motherboard, you really want to buy a real video card.

If the DX9 card is not built into the motherboard and has enough RAM, you can watch video drivers to see if there are any new ones.

Please note that when VS 2005 was shipped for the first time, we had the same visual glitches and a very slow design surface. In some cases, the design surface would not even show. After lowering a decent video card (at that time), the visual studio rocked. I expect that the year 2010 with all its eye candies will be exactly the same problems.

Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced / Performance and select "Customize for a better look." He took care of this problem on my machine.
