Is SMS the only way to register with Google App Engine?

I don’t have a mobile phone, but an SMS message is required to verify my Google App Engine account. Is there a way to complete the registration?

I am surprised that they do not use a Gmail account for this.

Edit: Google created one for me, the problem is resolved.

Not. If you don’t have a way to receive an SMS, you can fill in an SMS to create an account for you.

You can subscribe to any sms web service that allows you to receive SMS using virtual phone numbers.

The first one I found offers a free trial version of esendex.co.uk .

But a quick search will give you many more.

Or you could just ask someone to lend you your phone for 5 minutes ... getting sms is free in the end.

They probably don't use Gmail because there are too many Gmail accounts in the wild. Gmail now requires verification by SMS or voice call, but this is not always the case. Engine application is limited only to SMS (without the possibility of automatic voice call).

You probably have a friend whose cell phone you can use.

In fact, Google provoked a pretty strong defense on the new Gmail accounts, at least here in the UK, @ googlemail.co.uk addresses also require SMS confirmation.
