Question

I have a website where users register their projects for a specific event. I would like to highlight some projects on certain days on the first page.

What is the easiest way to add a “Featured Section” that does this? I know I can go through and make the message sticky, but it seems tedious. Is it possible to use Views for this or is there some other module?

As long as part of the “defined days” is a manual process, it looks ideal for a Nodequeue module that combines very well with views (and even automatically creates one for each individual queue). So, in your example, you can create a Nodequeue called "Featured Section" that accepts nodes of a certain type, and then you can quickly add content to it. The view on the home page will only contain nodes in this queue.

Modules for events: Views (for display on the first page) + CCK (for displayed fields and date fields) + calendar (for displaying events in the form of a calendar (page or block))

You can use Views for this and add a CCK field (or taxonomy if you want) to designate the node as "Featured".
