I am sure that you have access to the product. The absolute best way to learn about the product is to use the Cognos examples, which are an optional component for installation (supplied with Cognos).
The examples not only install GoSalesDb, which are their sample data, but the examples also have better methods. The Framework / Cubes / Dashboards / Reports models are built on the basis of this data so that you can see how this tool should function.
All Cognos / IBM trains for almost experienced users / content who will use this very pattern for most of the training.
The examples are used as a joke in the early versions, but now they are seriously polished and make it easy not only to study the product, but also see the methods and approaches that take years of training.
When these examples are installed, you will see all this content (Packages / Reports / Cubes / Dashboards / Metrics / Alerts) on the Cognos web portal, all ready and ready to run / view and learn how to do this, and you have a GoSales data source to use as a playground.
