Icons written in Emacs (Mac or Linux)

I would like for you to have a small icon next to each file, similar to what you see in the "list" or "detail" view in the graphical file browser. Someone sent a similar question, but the only answer was for Windows only; I want to be able to do this on Linux or Mac.

I’m pretty sure that the sad answer is no if you don’t do some kind of extensive hacking of the source code in Dired-mode. "

I think "bignose" is right, you cannot do it easily. But check out Dired + . It can colorize files by type so that you can get visual feedback on your bottled buffer.

I would also like to be able to do this. In general, I would like GNU Emacs to support the display of MS Windows icons (icon images). I would use them (optionally) in Icicles (in the *Completions* buffer) and Bookmark + , as well as in Dired + , to provide simple feedback on file types (and related Windows applications).

Alas, I was not able to interest Emacs Dev (yet). At least now we have image support (so you can, for example, view thumbnails in *Completions* ).

On Linux and MacOS, use dired-icon .
