A selection of colors that convert well to shades of gray

If I develop a tool that should be a good “screenshot” for printed documentation, can I easily choose colors that look different, even if they are printed in shades of gray?

EDIT: I was hoping for some kind of easy-to-use palette or tool, but the data presented here is very clear.

Yes. Your best bet is to choose colors with a high level of relative contrast. Honestly, it might be easiest for you to design your gray scale user interface first. Basically, you'll want to choose colors that are lighter or darker than the colors around them for a decent amount.

You can calculate brightness by RGB values:

Y = 0.2126 R + 0.7152 G + 0.0722 B

And make sure your Y values for the selected colors are distributed as evenly as possible.
