Are there any technical issues using animated GIFs for favicon websites instead of the actual .ico file?

When placing an icon on your site, you can apparently use an animated gif by simply changing the gif file extension to .ico .

Are you having trouble with this? (Apart from the fact that users are crazy about some dumb blinking icon.)

Have you seen how the browser got confused in the gif file with the .ico extension?

An old browser is likely to have a problem with it. And as always, remember that animations tend to annoy some people. Yes, the icons are small and in the address bar, but some people turned off JavaScript only because of scrolling status bar messages. Just because you can do this does not mean that you should.
