What are the reasons for not using doctrines in 2010?

I just participated in writing an application that does not use Doctype in jsp. Because of this, it is becoming increasingly difficult to fix html errors in different browsers. I did some research and realized what was happening and how to fix it, but this is not my question.

I noticed that Amazon.com and Cat.com do not use Doctypes. There are many other large sites that do not use them either. Does anyone know if there is a reason for this? How do they get around quirksmode ?

How do they get around quirksmode?

I think they do not. They probably do it on purpose. Although Google is refusing to support IE6, Amazon still probably has to support many older browsers, even before IE6.
