Can you "check" from SVN without getting all .svn?

Perhaps there is a correct term for this, but what if you just want to load a specific revision of a file / directory to disk and never want to make any changes - say, as part of the build / release process - and you don't want SVN meta information.

Is there a simple command for this? What does export do? Or is it to deal with the "un-SVNing" existing look?

Yes, the export must have the functionality you are looking for -

"SVN Export here: exports dragged files / folders to the destination location, i.e. creates a copy without .svn folders"

From Tortoise SVN site

Exports a copy, but deletes all .svn folders. That way you can check and then export.
