Where are the source files?

Ive created the repository, looked that it created Git, and could not find the files anywhere under the .git tree. So, how can I find out that my files are stored safely in Git?

What kind of files?

Git does not store duplicate files. The contents of the Git repository .git is essentially a database of all the content tracked by Git, as well as commits, tags, etc.

If your repository is a non-bare repository, it will have a working tree associated with it. The working tree is the most current representation of files tracked by Git.

You can also clone the repository to see that you are getting what you expect.
