Using IFRAME for simple advertising. Is this bad for SEO?

If you look here , you will see an ad intended to be placed on another site as an advertisement. Here is an example of where it is embedded.

The code for displaying the ad on the website is:

<iframe src="http://ads.lockedonmedia.com/zones/204" frameBorder="0" scrolling="no" style="width: 160px; height: 600px;">

I like this approach in that if the ad includes dynamic content such as “today's price”, the content will be easily reflected on the hosting web page.

My question is:

I understand that IFRAMEs present navigation problems, but is there a real impact on SEO, and if SEO-dependent developers avoid using it at all costs or are there circumstances in which they can be used without compromising your ranking?

One thing to keep in mind when using an iframe for advertising is to never insert a raw location into it! If you use an iframe that points to the URL of your ad source, at some point your site will become an attack site for serving malware from an unfriendly advertiser who changes his legitimate ad to malicious.
