Android energy usage tracking

I have an application that supports a longtime network connection to a server.

I periodically ping the server to see if it is alive.

I assume that this affects the battery life, but, apart from trying the wall time, the time between charges, I have no good way to quantify this.

Is there a mechanism to say when the processor "wakes up" or when it wants to fall asleep?

Is there a standard long-lasting connection method that minimizes energy consumption?

I guess this affects the battery life, but not the wall time, the time between fees, I have no good way of determining this.
