What does 960 gridder mean? http://gridder.andreehansson.se/ Is it just useful for hosting websites? I donโ€™t understand why these particular grids are so useful ...

Right! Grid 960 really helps with website layouts using CSS and divs, etc., where some people are used to relying on tables for the same thing.

I used this before and found it easy enough to use: http://960.gs/

And finally, it looks pretty easy to configure and use: http://www.1kbgrid.com/

The point of this kind of "Framework" is often:

  • Help developers simplify the layout for their website (reinvent the wheel less)
  • Especially considering cross-browser compatibility, which always makes it harder than it should be

The grid system was inherited from print design layouts and follows the same concept as the photographic rule of thirds . The idea is to align the content to certain boundaries to make your layout receptive โ€œeasyโ€ to view and understand.

960px comes out of an attempt to set within the lowest common denominator (possibly 1024x768), and 12/16 column layouts are probably the highest practical dividers.

I do not think that you will find a specific technical answer for this, since it is rather a subjective aesthetic technique. Someone with the best design / linguistic abilities could describe it better :)
