How to hone / finish / correct text in an image

I have some scanned images containing text. After scanning, the text is dull, and in some places the text skips a few pixels. The loss of pixels is very small, but enough to sharpen the image was not enough. I would like to find an algorithm that will improve the text and try to execute or fix the pixels that were lost during the scan. I know this is a high order, but I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I am using C #. I know how to sharpen an image, but not specifically for text. I am open to other languages โ€‹โ€‹if there are advantages. I looked at Imagemagick and found some scripts to help remove and clear text. I really need a โ€œrepairโ€ the most. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

It may not be what you are looking for, but we use Pegasus Imaging products, and their ScanFix module can do such things.

In particular, check out anti-aliasing and character enhancement features. It may be redundant for what you need, but I really like their stuff. It might be worth taking a trial version and running it.
