Notify users from my webpage that their browser does not have the latest update?

I want to show a warning message to all my registered users in my web application if their browser is not the latest version. Therefore, if they use IE8 without the latest security fix, or if they use Firefox 3.0 (instead 3.5 or 3.6 at this stage) or use an older version of Safari / Chrome when releasing a newer stable version.

Check out jQuery.browser . It has some constants for all different browsers and the current version. You can save a small database as a javascript file that contains the latest browser versions and which you get from all your web applications.

You will need to collect the user agent string and then do some sort of lookup table on this list to see if an update is required. Then you can fill in a DIV or open a dialog box, etc.

I am not aware of any โ€œautomaticโ€ service that tells you that you are out of date, other than the built-in browser mechanisms.
