How much space is reserved for storing applications on the iPhone?

Does anyone know which subset of the total storage capacity of the iPhone is reserved for applications and application data? I'm not talking about RAM, but about disk memory. I remember reading that only part of the iPhone’s capacity was used for the application data, and the rest was used for music and multimedia, but I can’t remember the amount. Thanks.

It depends on the model, of course - you have 8, 16 and 32 GB options. My 16 GB iPhone 3G will have about 14 GB of free space, while my 32 GB iPhone 3GS will have about 28 GB of free space. This free space is not limited to applications, nor music, nor video, nor podcasts - it is common. As long as there is free space, you can install more applications or sync more media files. There is no separation of hard disk space by file type.

On the other hand, no application can take up more than 2 GB of hard disk space.

iTunes assigns ~ 500 mb of flash drive to the OS partition, and the rest is assigned to the user partition to store App Store apps / data, music, videos, podcasts, email, photos, etc. After synchronization, iTunes will always ensure there is at least ~ 200 MB, deleting music (usually)
