Respond to new contacts in the Contacts for Android app

I would like to perform a certain operation every time a user adds a new contact to the Android Contacts application. It will include the use of new contact information.

Is there an easy way to do this? Is there any event that I can listen to, or do I need to expand the Contacts application? Or should I just think of some other approach, if that is not possible.

It seems like your best way of doing this is to start a light background service that uses a content observer for these contacts, because there it is not an intention that is publicly broadcast when a new contact is entered.
