Effective Google for Short Names

From time to time I need to find a keyword or function in a very small language and / or have special characters.
Examples include the keyword "as" in python ("python as", "python as keyword", etc. does not work)
things like "$:" in ruby โ€‹โ€‹(you need to know what it represents)
'p' command in irb
etc.

Google completely fails in such searches .. You should not pose such stupid questions on SO .. language documentation often does not explain it properly (or, if so, I donโ€™t know where to look without the help of Google)

What can you do in such situations? How to persuade google to find answers to such problems?

Using quotes helps. For example, if you are looking for:

python "as keyword"

then the first hit is the Keyword as ((Unofficial) Python Reference Wiki) . Other hits also relate to the keyword "how."

Other than that, I would look for pages that deal with all the Python keywords and find the corresponding entry.

However, for characters, this is much more complicated. Correct terminology helps a lot - if you know that "?:" Is a conditional operator in C #, it is easier to find. That a good book (or, again, a list of operators / keywords) helps put characters in the language.

Good for ruby, why don't you look for global global globules? I assume that you have enough knowledge about what you are looking to describe it?

for characters, I often have to type a character (although google gets better with characters.)

e.g.: http://www.google.com/search?q=unix+%22dot+dot%22 or http://www.google.com/search?q=ruby+%22dollar+sign%22
