SQL Server Express 2008 Install Side by Side with SQL 2005 Express Fails

When I try to install a new instance of SQL Server 2008 Express on a development machine with SQL 2005 Express already running, the installation check failed because the SQL 2005 Express tools were installed and I was told to remove them.

What exactly does this mean?

After reading this article:

http://www.asql.biz/Articoli/SQLX08/Art1_5.aspx

I uninstalled the 2005 version of SQL Management Studio, but received the same error from the 2008 installer during my subsequent attempt.

Update

1) Only the SQL 2005 management studio has been removed. The same error was received from the 2008 installation.

2) Removed all common components of SQL 2005. The same error was received from the 2008 installation.

3) Installed the common components from the SQL 2008 setup program. The same error was received from the 2008 installation when trying to install a new instance of SQL 2008.

4) Removed components of SQL 2008, reboot, reinstall SQL 2005 Management Studio from the installation media, reboot, uninstalled components of the SQL 2005 workstation from the control panel, reboot.

Installing SQL 2008 now continues as it should.

It seems that if I booted again after Update 2, everything would be smoother .: - (

Although you should not have problems starting the 2005 database instance next to the 2008 instance, the tools are installed in the shared directory, so you cannot install two versions of the installed tools. Fortunately, 2008 tools are compatible with feedback. When we talk, I use SSMS 2008 and Profiler 2008 to manage 2005 Express instances. It works great.

Before installing the 2008 tools, you need to remove all and all the β€œcommon” components from 2005. Try to go to the "Add or Remove Programs" control panel, find Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and click "Change." Then select "Workstation Components" and delete everything (this will not delete your database engine).

I believe that 2008 installer also has the ability to update only common components. You can try this. Good luck

In my case, even after removing all the components related to 2005, it did not work. I had to resort to brute force and delete the following registry keys

32-bit OS : HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Microsoft SQL Server \ 90

64-bit OS : HKLM \ Software \ Wow6432Node \ Microsoft \ Microsoft SQL Server \ 90

I had to disable the components of the workstation and SSMS Tools Pack (SSMS Tools Pack is an add-on for Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), including SSMS Express). The installation of SQL 2008 now continues as it should.

The problem is that SQL 2008 MS has an error connecting to a remote server (for example, as a service provider collocation), it will always try to open the db cube in the list, and since the ur db possibilities of the first in the list are really low, it will throw mistakenly and not display the list of dbs ... that use sql 2005 management studio, it just works.

If I could use SQL 2008 MS, but it seems as far as I can connect to remote SQL 2005, there can be no talk on my dev machine on SQL Server :(

Just remove the workstation components from the Add or Remove Programs program - SQL Server 2005. Removing the workstation components, installing SQL Server 2008 is going well.

Just uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 from the control panel

NB These notes apply to SQL Server Express 2008 R2 (so Microsoft still hasn't simplified this). I also understand that I complicated the situation by installing 32-bit SQL Server Express 2005 and 64-bit SQL Server Express 2008.

I followed the steps of Josh Hinman above . It is not enough to remove the components of the SQL Server Express 2005 workstation. I also needed to uninstall 2005 Management Studio.

I also tried the Upgrade route suggested by Josh Hinman by clicking "Upgrade from SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008". This route never gave me the opportunity to install components side by side, it just went through the upgrade process from 2005 to 2008. It completed successfully - but actually did nothing. Fortunately, although this did not damage existing database instances. Therefore, be careful when trying this route.

If you currently have the Red Gate SQL Toolbelt, you will need to fully understand this before continuing. Somehow, he adds a link to the version of SQL Management Studio 2005.

I also had to remove SMSS before it completed this step.
