Google Page Rank - New Domain / Link Migration

I was tasked with reorganizing a clean HTML site into a CMS. if all goes well, the new site will eventually become the primary URL, and the old domain will be phased out. the old domain has a decent enough page rank, and the company wants to mitigate any loss of page rank for this. Looking through the available options, I found several things:

  • It’s best to use 301 redirection when you’re ready to switch ( source ).
  • there is no site map on the current site, so adding one and submitting it may help their future page rank.
  • I need to invite them to contact people who are now linking to them to update their links.
  • The process of restoring the old page rank takes some time, so plan to restore the links while we see that the new site is flexible enough to guarantee a complete switch.

my question is : as a result of the transition to a site managed by CMS, links to different pages will change to accommodate the new structure. would it be a problem to try (or improve) the current page rank? What methods are available to mitigate the problem of changing individual page URLs? is there a preferred method besides mapping individual pages to their new 301 redirected locations? (the site has literally hundreds of pages, pah ...)

ex. http://domain.com/Messy_HTML_page_with_little_categorization.html -> http://newdomain.com/nice/structured/pages.php

I understand that this is not really a programming issue, but I felt that the information could be useful for developers who were entrusted with doing such things in addition to developing the site.

If you really want to make sure that the page rank is not lost, you will want to replace the old content with correctly redirecting 301 new places. With 301 redirects, search spiders will know that the content has moved and the page level is usually carried over. It also helps inbound links.

However, the downside is that after a certain period of time, you just need to get rid of the old domains.

You can make a handler for the HTML files and map the old pages to the new structure with 301 redirects.
