I was tasked with reorganizing a clean HTML site into a CMS. if all goes well, the new site will eventually become the primary URL, and the old domain will be phased out. the old domain has a decent enough page rank, and the company wants to mitigate any loss of page rank for this. Looking through the available options, I found several things:
- Itβs best to use 301 redirection when youβre ready to switch ( source ).
- there is no site map on the current site, so adding one and submitting it may help their future page rank.
- I need to invite them to contact people who are now linking to them to update their links.
- The process of restoring the old page rank takes some time, so plan to restore the links while we see that the new site is flexible enough to guarantee a complete switch.
my question is : as a result of the transition to a site managed by CMS, links to different pages will change to accommodate the new structure. would it be a problem to try (or improve) the current page rank? What methods are available to mitigate the problem of changing individual page URLs? is there a preferred method besides mapping individual pages to their new 301 redirected locations? (the site has literally hundreds of pages, pah ...)
ex. http://domain.com/Messy_HTML_page_with_little_categorization.html -> http://newdomain.com/nice/structured/pages.php
I understand that this is not really a programming issue, but I felt that the information could be useful for developers who were entrusted with doing such things in addition to developing the site.
