Is there any reasonable way to implement the cd command on VMS?

I would like to say things like

cd [.fred] and send my default directory and my invitation to change to indicate the full path to my current location.

Here is my setup:

You need 2 files (typed below): godir.com and prompt.com in your sys $ login

You can define a character

CD == "@sys$login:godir.com"

But I suggest you use something else ... (e.g. SD == "@sys $ login: godir.com")

I am changing the help text. It was in French ...

You will have to retype the escape characters in godir.com Replace ESC with the actual output in GRAPH_BOUCLE: (see bottom of godir.com)

Then, to use it:

 SD ? SD a_directory ...

Just enter

cd:==set default

on the command line. You can also put this in your LOGIN.COM file, but be sure to put $ in front, i.e.

$ cd:==set default

To change your prompt to show its default value, something like this might work to the point

$ set prompt='f$env("default")'

There is a problem though, given that the VMS prompt has a maximum of 32 characters, and your default value may be more than that. See this page for a solution to this problem.

My DCL is really rusty, but can you not create an alias for SET DEFAULT named CD?

Use HGSD, which implements the SD command (short for SET DEFAULT). Just go to google. This is an improved version of Hunter Goatley from an older version.

The only thing he cannot handle (yet) is the logic with multiple translations. In addition, it works like a charm, and you do not need to enter full directory names. You can even go to the next directory at the same level.

It can also set an invitation if you have the correct privileges at a time, so your invitation will display your default directory, as in the old days in DOS.
