Version library such as SQLite database library?

I like how the SQLite library can be included in the application, and the application has a fully functional database to use.

Similarly, is there an open source version library that I can include in my application so that I can save file versions as well as perform differences and merges?

SVN does not require any prerequisites for the end user. You can embed SVN directly in your application. To learn more about subversion integration, visit the " Application Integration / Embedding " on the SVN forum.

Answering my question myself, I recently discovered hgshelve and gitshelve , which is almost exactly what I was looking for.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "included in the application", since you can potentially deliver any library as long as licensing is allowed. Do you mean the fact that sqlite is small or that it is a public domain ?

Mercurial is a similarly lightweight version control software. If you are writing your application in python, which is probably since python now includes sqlite3 , importing functions directly from mercury source code should not be too complicated, otherwise there is no shame in invoking command line processes, although it may be more clunkier. Mercurial is not publicly available, but it is GPL'd.

Mercurial is also my personal favorite among modern version control systems. It jumps ahead of CVS and Subversion and is very similar to GIT, but somewhat easier to use.

You can see fossil , a scm tool written by sqlite. I don’t know how easy it is to implement, but it is one executable file, so it can be easily launched from the application.

Perhaps launching it as a separate process may be better than implementing it, as it will not slow down your application while it does what it does.

In my opinion, Firebird is one of the best options for embedded database scripts.
Also, Microsoft SQL Server Compact (closed, but free) may be suitable, but it is less capable than Firebird.

EDIT: I misunderstood the question. If you do not need an RDBMS, you can try inserting SVN into your application.
