Learning NodeJS and MongoDB Docker

I have a NodeJS project that uses MongoDB. I would like to run this service in a Docker container, but despite the many examples on which I based my training, this will not work.

Here is my / heimdall_jwt / Dockerfile :

FROM node:9-alpine WORKDIR /usr/src/app COPY package.json /usr/src/app RUN npm install RUN npm install pm2 -g COPY . /usr/src/app EXPOSE 3000 CMD ["pm2-docker", "start", "process.json"]

And here is my /heimdall_jwt/docker-compose.yml

version: '2' # Define the services/containers to be run services: myapp: #name of your service build: ./ # specify the directory of the Dockerfile ports: - "3000:3000" #specify ports forwarding links: - database # link this service to the database service volumes: - .:/usr/src/app depends_on: - database database: # name of the service image: mongo # specify image to build container from

I tried working through: $ docker-compose up --build which causes the mango to build and start. Here is the condensed output:

I am not sure what is going on here, but I assume that the dependencies are either not installed or are not copied to the working directory. how

UPDATED Changed from the original publication as I am still struggling to get this to work.

Copy files after npm install . Right now, you are installing the dependencies and then copying everything, so that you undo this installation effectively and you have no dependencies.

Your Dockerfile has:

 ... RUN npm install RUN npm install pm2 -g COPY . /usr/src/app ...

It should be:

 ... COPY . /usr/src/app RUN npm install RUN npm install pm2 -g ...
