My web extension works with the browsers Chromium, Firefox, Edge, but, as I understand it, now it is impossible to simply open the same code base with the Safari browser?
We may not know this for sure, but Apple does not currently plan to support the (version) WebExtensions API. The name of the standard / specification is the browser extension.
Apple is not part of the W3C group, which is trying to make a cross-browser standard: https://www.w3.org/community/browserext/participants

A preliminary specification can be found here: https://browserext.imtqy.com/browserext/
