Reset Windows Activation / License Key Removal

I find it difficult to find and answer this. If I had to hypothetically delete the Windows license key from a virtual machine specially configured for the partner, and I need to delete it before transferring the VM, how would I do it? Naturally, the expiring 30-day grace period has expired and I am using the MSDN license key, but I need to delete the key before transferring the VM. The recipient can enter his own license key. For example, how do I reset the activation key activation wizard?

  • Open a command prompt as an administrator.

  • Enter slmgr /upk and wait for it to complete. This will remove the current product key from Windows and transfer it to an unlicensed state.

  • Type in slmgr /cpky and wait for it to complete. This will remove the product key from the registry if it is still there.

  • Enter slmgr /rearm and wait for it to complete. This means resetting Windows activation timers so that new users are prompted to activate Windows when they put the key.

This should return the system to the pre-key state.

Hope this helps you!

In Windows XP -

  • Reboot to "Safe Mode Using the Command Line"
  • Type "explorer" in the command line that appears and press [Enter]
  • Click Start> Run and enter the following:

    rundll32.exe syssetup, SetupOobeBnk

Reboot and log in as usual.

This will reset the 30-day timer to activate up to 30 days so that you can normally enter the key.
