Getting rid of the gradient at the top of Activity (Android)

How can I get rid of the gradient at the top of my screen (the topmost blue in the screenshot below ... below the notification bar)?

It can be used; look at the windowContentOverlay attribute. In particular, you can create a new theme :

 <style name="Theme.Foo" parent="android:style/Theme.Light"> <item name="android:windowContentOverlay">@null</item> </style> 

And then announce that your activity should use this topic:

 <activity android:name=".FooActivity" android:theme="@style/Theme.Foo"> ... 

Although the best option is to install this theme for all actions in the application, for consistency:

 <application android:theme="@style/Theme.Foo"> ...
