This will most likely result in version incompatibility between Firebase and FirebaseUI. I came across the same question and spent 30-45 minutes trying to figure it out. In the end, what I did to continue the Firebase in Weekend tutorial was:

git checkout 1.04-firebase-auth-firebaseui-signin

This will switch to the branch at this point in the tutorial. After that, it works great.

This may not be the perfect answer to the question of what the problem is, but you will go with the course again.

Version matching resolves this. Compatible with Firebase / Google Play service libraries, it matches

 FirebaseUI Version Firebase/Play Services Version 1.0.0 9.8.0

So, if the dependencies are changed to

 compile 'com.google.firebase:firebase-database:9.8.0' compile 'com.google.firebase:firebase-auth:9.8.0' compile 'com.firebaseui:firebase-ui-auth:1.0.0'

instead

 compile 'com.google.firebase:firebase-database:10.0.0' compile 'com.google.firebase:firebase-auth:10.0.0' compile 'com.firebaseui:firebase-ui-auth:1.0.0'

which is the latest firebase version for the firebaseUI version, the application works fine

You just need to add: compile 'com.google.android.gms: play-services-auth: xxx' (find the version you need here ). They skipped to say that you also need to add support for game-auth services for Google authentication.
