Open shell Mx shell in other windows

In previous emacs, the "Mx shell" is a new shell buffer in the current windows.

but lately I am updating emacs to GNU Emacs 26.0.50.2. "Mx shell" is the new shell buffer in other windows. I searched google and could not find the answer. Does anyone know how to prevent this behavior.

The reason is that the shell uses (pop-to-buffer buffer) instead of (switch-to-buffer buffer) . I don’t know how to recommend this function, so I can’t give you an appropriate answer. However, if you want the shell work the way you want, you can simply add the entire function to your configuration.

Perhaps someone else can replace the function with advice. I would be interested in this solution.

Add this line to the .emacs file:

 (push (cons "\\*shell\\*" display-buffer--same-window-action) display-buffer-alist) 

This fixed it for me. I use eMacs 25.2 (9.0) on a Mac and get really annoyed by the shell opening in another frame, or even a new frame when there was only one. This is the source where I got this answer from.
