When is a CloudKit CKErrorIncompatibleVersion message sent?

The documentation says that:

CKErrorIncompatibleVersion

The application version is less than the minimum acceptable version.

Available in iOS 8.0 and later.

But it does not provide details about which context will cause this error. As far as I know, there is no way to install the minimum acceptable version of the application.
